Forum: software Subject: Help:How to Download FLV offline and enjoy FLV on portable devices

In no time, you may come across some interesting videos on YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Google Video, and other popular free video sharing site. You may enjoy the videos more or less, and sometimes, just sometimes, you come across a video you really need to have on your hard drive or portable playback terminals, and to watch over and over again, every time you feel the need.

All these videos are encoded in the format of FLV, Flash video. FLV is a proprietary file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player (formerly known as Macromedia Flash Player) version 6, 7, 8, or 9. Flash Video content may also be embedded within or linked to SWF files. Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Reuters.com, Yahoo! Video and MySpace. The BBC has recently begun using .flv based media on their news portal.

FLV Flash Video is viewable on most operating systems, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, etc, via the widely available Adobe Flash Player and the web browser plugin, or one of several third-party programs such as MPlayer, Moyea FLV Player or any player which uses DirectShow filters (such as Media Player Classic and Windows Media Center) when the ffdshow filter is installed.

Unfortunately, YouTube seems to discourage its users from downloading the videos. This can get rather annoying because you'll need to save a bookmark with the video URL, load it in your browser every time you want to re-watch it, wait until it's loaded and so on.

FLV to Video Converter Pro, all these troubles are saved, The FLV to Video Converter Pro, along with the FLV Downloader, offers one-stop solution to download and watch FLV movies on your portable devices, wherever you go and whenever you feel the need. You can easily download the file in Flash Video format (FLV), convert it into AVI, MPEG, MP4, MOV, WMV, 3GP and watch it on your PC or even on your mobile phone.

Besides this, this program offers brilliant solutions to convert FLV files of all types to MP3 audio, WMA, AAC, as well as DV. What you need to do is to launch the program, start the FLV Downloader, import the downloaded FLV, configurate the output settings, and convert.

Note:
When you find your favorite FLV Flash video files on YouTube and want to copy it offline, this tutorial may be of great help to you. But first make sure that the FLV file is playing online.

Here is a Google link that shows you how to make a java bookmark that will create a "Download as mp4" link on any Youtube video page.

No need for external websites or software and it's from Google, the owners of Youtube.

Once downloaded you can convert it into any format you want (including 3gp for cellphones) using WinFF. http://www.biggmatt.com/winff/

The best part is that both work great, are platform (OS) independent, and totally free.

I don't understand why people want to download mp4 versions of youtube videos. I personally prefer to download the mp3 version of the video to get it on my pretty old mp3 player. As google does not offer this functionality I have to use http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ for it.

MP4 is audio AND video. MP3 is audio only.

Yes mp4 is exactly what you will get if you open a youtube video page but with less functionality. You won't have any comments or related videos. The only reason to download it as mp4 would be to view it on an iPhone or something like this. But if you have an device where you can watch mp4 videos it is probably modern enough to simply view the video at youtube. A mp3 file can be played on even the cheapest crappy mp3 player you will find.

But anyways, I just wanted to give my little bit of advice how to get a video from youtube as a mp3 file (which is really useful on music videos) ;-)

For firefox users you can also install download helper from the firefox add-on section. It will automatically allow you to save any video from any site. I use this for public domain movies most of the time. they can also be converted using "super converter" designed around ffmpeg and mencoder open source projects.
